Trauma Isn't Stored in Your Body. New Brain Science Says It's Something Your Brain Keeps Doing

You've probably heard some version of "the body keeps the score," the idea that trauma gets lodged in your muscles, your fascia, your gut, waiting there until the right massage or breathwork session releases it. It's a comforting image, because it gives trauma a physical address you can go find and work on. A new theoretical paper from researchers at Florida Atlantic University, USC, and University College London argues that the image, while emotionally resonant, isn't how the brain actually works, and that getting the mechanism right changes what recovery looks like.

What the research found


This isn't a clinical trial with patients and outcome measures. It's a theoretical paper, published in Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience by Steven Kotler, Michael Mannino, Glenn Fox, and neuroscientist Karl Friston, one of the researchers behind the "predictive processing" model of how brains work. Their argument draws on existing computational neuroscience rather than new patient data, so think of it as a synthesis and reframing of the field rather than a single experiment with a result.


Here's the core idea: your brain isn't a passive recorder of what happens to you. It's constantly predicting what's about to happen next, using past experience to guess at the present moment before your senses even finish reporting it. After a traumatic event, the brain updates that prediction system in a specific way. It becomes overconfident that danger is still present, long after the danger has passed. That's not a memory sitting in your tissue. It's a live, ongoing forecast your brain keeps making, over and over, whether or not the current moment calls for it.


The authors use a concept called metastability to describe what trauma actually disrupts. Think of a healthy brain as able to flow between different modes, alert, relaxed, playful, focused, the way a good driver shifts gears depending on the road. Metastability is that flexibility. What trauma seems to damage isn't a specific body part or a stored file of the event. It's the brain's ability to smoothly shift out of threat mode once the threat is gone.


The bigger picture


This "brain as prediction machine" framework isn't new, and it isn't just this one team's idea. A 2020 paper in Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews proposed something similar: that a traumatic memory becomes a prediction with unusually high confidence attached to it, so the brain keeps reselecting it even when what's actually happening doesn't match, which is one way to explain why flashbacks feel like they're happening now rather than being remembered. A 2024 review took this further into complex PTSD specifically, arguing that a negative self-concept and difficulty regulating emotion both trace back to the brain's predictions about body signals (interoception) drifting out of sync with what the body is actually reporting. Related work on value-based decision-making in PTSD makes a related point: many standard treatment models treat the person as a passive object being acted upon by their symptoms, when the predictive processing model puts the person's own sense of agency back at the center of recovery. A 2026 paper looking at complex PTSD and MDMA-assisted psychotherapy adds a piece about why certain interventions may work, proposing that they temporarily loosen an overly rigid sense of self long enough for new, more accurate predictions to take hold.


None of this is settled science. These are theoretical and review papers building models, not large randomized trials proving one treatment beats another. What's consistent across all of them is the shift away from "trauma is stored somewhere" and toward "trauma is a pattern the brain keeps running."


The naturopathic lens


This lines up with something I see constantly in patients dealing with chronic, hard-to-diagnose conditions, especially mast cell activation and gut motility issues. A nervous system that's stuck forecasting danger doesn't stay contained to the mind. It shows up as a gut that won't settle, a body that reacts to food or scent or temperature changes as though they're threats, sleep that never gets deep enough to feel restorative. If the newest neuroscience is right that trauma is an ongoing prediction rather than a stored injury, that reframes a lot of what I think of as "unexplained" physical symptoms. They may not be unexplained so much as downstream of a nervous system that hasn't gotten the memo that the danger passed.


I want to be direct about scope here. Treating trauma and PTSD directly belongs to trained mental health professionals, and if that's what you're navigating, a trauma-informed therapist is the right first call, not your naturopathic doctor. Where I come in is the body side of that equation: helping calm an autonomic nervous system that's stuck in overdrive, so the physical symptoms that ride along with chronic threat prediction, the flares, the gut chaos, the exhaustion, have room to settle.


How to apply this now


If any of this sounds familiar, a few directions are worth exploring alongside, not instead of, trauma-focused mental health care. Practices that build interoceptive awareness, noticing and naming what's actually happening in your body right now, can help recalibrate a prediction system that's been running on old data. Novel or flow-inducing activities (the research nods to exercise, absorbing creative work, and time in nature) appear to give the brain the kind of fresh, high-quality information it needs to update outdated threat predictions. And regulating the basics, sleep, breath, movement, gives your nervous system fewer reasons to stay on high alert while the deeper work happens elsewhere. None of this replaces working with a qualified trauma therapist. It's the physical scaffolding that can make that work more effective.
